    Description

1930s-40s Martha Martta Nukketeollisuus Turku, Finland Finnish Padasjoki Doll
She is almost 10 inches tall and h
as original tag on her skirt with Padasjoki in the middle of the tag showing she is one of the older models of this doll.
This lovely rare international vintage doll wears the traditional costume from Padasjoki, Finland in south central Finland.
The doll artist was Martta Nukketeollisuus of Turku, Finland who operated a doll company from 1908 to 1974.
Finland is a part of Northern Europe, bordering on Sweden and the former Soviet Union.
Her head, hands, and legs seemed to be made of a very fine composite that resembles bisque.
The doll’s facial features are painted in the classic Martta style. Her wig has fine blond braids with red ribbons at the ends. Her Padasjoki costume represents one of the traditional regional or national costumes of Finland
Examples of international dolls are shown in Loretta Holz's book "The How-To Book of International Dolls" and in the book "World Colors" by Hedrick and Matchette. They are showing the hard rubber newer dolls, however, not this older more rare type.
She wears a navy woven skirt with red and navy stripes along with a burgandy satin vest with a lace-up front. Her cream-colored linen blouse has long sleeves with cuffs. Her cream colored apron has a hand embroidered strip at the bottom that forms eyelets all across. She has a woven scarf over her shoulders forming a V in back and front. It is tacked down near the waist. Her legs are painted white to be stockings and black shoes are painted onto her feet.  Her body is stuffed cloth.
(right leg broke at the ankle and was glued back on - see image)
The previous doll's owner believed this one was purchased by the family in 1948 and they thought the doll was purchased in France so they called her, mistakenly, a french doll.  Family's provenance tag is included.
